What is special about McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School?
McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School is governed by the Treme Charter School Association (TCSA). TCSA is a non-profit school board of local civic leaders who are interested in developing world class public schools in the neighborhoods around Treme in New Orleans.
In November 2005, the state of Louisiana took control of most of the schools in New Orleans. Management of some schools was given to groups of interested citizens who wanted a chance to create their own models of education. TCSA is one of the governance Boards that received a Type 5 charter from the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) in February 2007.
When will the school year begin?
The first day of school for children will be the second Monday in August. Teachers will begin preparation ten days before students arrive on July.
Who can attend?
McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School is a public school. Any child of school age can attend the open access school―from anywhere in New Orleans. Kindergarten students must be five years old by September 30.
What schools are in the Treme Charter School Association?
The first TCSA School is McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School. Additional schools, including a High School, may be chartered by the association in the future.
My child attended McDonogh 42 last year. Do I still need to register?
Yes. Current information is needed every year before students begin classes. Registration for returning students will be held in March.
Where can I go to register?
You can register new and returning children at McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School on 1651 North Tonti Street. Registration hours are Monday – Friday in July and August from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
What documents do I need to register my child?
All students, upon entering McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School for the first time, shall present the following:
• an official birth certificate,
• current immunization records,
• an official social security card,
• any two of the following proofs of residence: current utility bill, voter registration card, telephone bill, welfare card, federal income tax return, w-2 form, letter from case worker, property tax form, current lease, sewerage and water board bill, or state identification card,*
• proof of legal guardianship, if not the birth parent,
• a current report card with an academic grade placement,
• I.E.P. (special education students, if available), and
• 504 accommodations documentation (if applicable and available).
•*Returning students only need proof of residency
Is there a program for preschool children?
Pre-Kindergarten classes are available for a limited number of students on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must be 4 years old by October 1 to be eligible for Pre-K.
How does TCSA make school better?
TCSA makes learning come alive by integrating the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum with real life experiences and local community events. Governance of the school is determined by a Board that includes parents of school age children. A focus on high quality instruction and clear and specific academic objectives help prevent students from failing.
Do we have to buy uniforms?
Yes. The school has a strict dress code to prohibit any clothing that disrupts or creates a distraction from the learning. Details are available at the school. Uniforms are required. If parents need assistance in affording school clothing, help will be provided.
Will transportation be provided?
Transportation will be provided by charter school buses for any child who lives more than one mile from the school. Parents must request transportation at the time of registration.
Does my child qualify for free or reduced price lunch?
If your child qualified for free or reduced price lunch in the former school, he or she will probably still qualify in the charter school. Applications will be taken during registration.
Will the school have a breakfast and lunch program?
The school operate a breakfast program (7:40 – 8:00 AM) and a lunch program (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM) every day. Students must apply to participate.
Can we participate in before or after school care?
Plans will be made for before and after school care, if enough parents request such a program. Funding will come from a combination of federal funds, grant funds, and if necessary, participant fees.
What about my special needs child?
The school will provide for children with special needs through its inclusion plan and resource center. Students who have Individualized Education Plans will have accommodations made for their exceptionalities.
How can I get involved with the school?
Once your child has enrolled in McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School, parents are encouraged to join the Parent-Teacher Association and register as a School Volunteer. All parents and guardians must sign a Parent-School Compact, in support of the children.
