Enrollment

 McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School is an open enrollment public school. Free transportation is provided for students who live a mile or more from the school. Enrollment for 2011- 2012 is expected to reach the maximum of 500 students. Registration hours are Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. beginning in March.


 School Schedule

Classes for all students begin on August 8, 2011.  The school day is from 8:00 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Breakfast is served at 7:40 a.m. 



Class Sizes and Formats

Class sizes are set at an average of 20 students to guarantee individualized attention from the teacher.  Pre-K – 6th grade students are taught in a self-contained classroom environment learning from one primary teacher and enrichment teachers.  7th – 8th grade students are departmentalized with highly qualified and certified middle school teachers delivering core subjects

Curriculum














An emphasis is placed on reading which allows students to read self-selected books and novels at their own pace. Computer assisted ongoing assessments show student comprehension and enjoyment of literature.


The School-wide literacy program offers daily, small-group instruction focusing on vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. 


Certified teachers provide instruction in regular and special education settings. Students with special needs receive services within an inclusive setting with the support of special educators and paraprofessionals. A Resource Center provides individualized attention from a certified Special Education Teacher.


Field trips are planned at all grade levels to expose students to cultural learning opportunities throughout the community and city.


 

Special Education

Students with Individualized Education Plans participate in an inclusion program supported by a Resource Center.














Regular education students and Special Education students are taught together in the same classes.  When necessary to meet a child’s specific needs, Special Education students may also have the assistance of a certified special education teacher and a para in the school’s resource center


Technology

All students receive training on state-of-the-art computers, using the latest software programs in the school’s computer lab and classrooms. Computer stations are also available for students in classrooms for instruction during class.  The student to computer ratio is 5:1.


Classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards for large group instruction and internet connectivity.


Specialized Areas 





















Students also participate in specialized curriculum areas including:



















Visual Art - Students are exposed to many forms of fine art through a variety of media.


Library/Media Center - The School library offers students hundreds of books to borrow, as well as filtered access to the Internet for the purpose of research.


Physical Education/Health - Each class is provided health and physical education instruction by a certified professional.


Athletics - Boys Flag Football and Basketball Teams are available for interested students.


Vocal Music and Instrumental Music - Each class has regularly scheduled general music classes to acquaint students with a variety of traditional songs and music.


Students in grades 5-8 who are interested in learning to play a musical instrument will be eligible for membership in the school band.


All students will be taught to read music by a certified music teacher.


Additional Distinctive Programs



















Remedial Instruction - Reading Para Educators assist identified students having difficulties in language arts and reading.


Counseling Services - The school provides a full-time counselor and social worker to aid students and their families.


Pre-Kindergarten Program - All Pre-Kindergarten students have full-day school.  Students must be four years old by September 30th.


Speech and Language Services - Students with articulation or language development difficulties may be eligible for participation in the speech therapy program.



After School Activities













 




LEAP/iLEAP tutoring as well as homework assistance is available to all select eligible students after school hours as part of the Title I program.


Extracurricular activities planned for students will include Dance, Cheerleaders, Majorettes, Drama, Student Council, Scouting and Athletics.


Open World operates a 21st Century Community Learning Center to provide homework assistance and tutoring to lower grade students after school.
